Fuji gear

Know what you are buying

Fuji's value is in the technology. Here is what the differences mean, before the range.

A Fuji guide is a ring, a frame and a shape. The ring is what the line touches, and its material sets how much heat and friction the line sees on a long run. The frame is what holds it to the rod, and its alloy sets how much the tip weighs and how it survives salt. The shape is how the guide meets the line on a cast, and Fuji's K-Series frames are shaped so a loop of braid slides off instead of knotting.

Every one of those choices is written in the product code on the packet. Learn to read it and the whole range opens up.

How to read a Fuji code, TKWTG 16, for example:

  1. TTitanium frame (P, CC, BC and GM are stainless finishes)
  2. KWFrame family, KW is the K-Series double-foot guide
  3. TRing material, Torzite (S is SiC, A is Alconite, O is the O ring)
  4. GG for a running guide, T for a rod tip
  5. 16Ring size; rod tips add the tube diameter, as in 12/3.6

The ring letter is always the one directly before the G or T. So BCMGOT 12/3.6 is a frosted dark-grey stainless MG rod tip with an O ring, size 12 ring, on a 3.6mm tube.

Repairing a rod? Start with the tube size

Most Fuji sold in New Zealand goes onto a rod that already exists, a snapped tip, a cracked ring, a guide lost on a boat rail. A rod tip is sized by its ring and then by the inside diameter of its tube in millimetres, so a 12/3.6 has a size-12 ring on a tube that fits a 3.6mm blank tip. Measure the tip of the blank with callipers, and buy the tube size that matches.

A running guide is matched by ring size and frame family to the ones beside it. The code on the packet tells you both, the Technology page explains how to read it.

Seventy years of guides

Fuji Kogyo of Shizuoka, Japan, has made rod components since the 1950s: its first guide in 1955, the first ceramic guide ring in 1964, the one-piece stainless frame in 1977, the SiC ring in 1981, the titanium frame in 1985, the tangle-free K-Series in 2009 and the Torzite ring in 2013. Most of the rods on a New Zealand shop wall are built on Fuji parts, whether or not the rod brand says so.

What is on this site is the part of that range Monster Distribution brings into New Zealand, with the New Zealand RRP for every size that has one.
